Jean D’Amour was first elected in 2009 as the MNA for the Rivière‑du‑Loup riding, which became the Rivière‑du‑Loup–Témiscouata riding in 2012. He was the mayor of Rivière-du-Loup from 1999 to 2007, prior to which he worked in communications, as a political attaché and journalist.
In April 2014, Jean D’Amour Québec’s Minister for Transport and the Implementation of the Maritime Strategy and Minister responsible for the Bas‑Saint‑Laurent region and the Gaspésie–Îles‑de‑la‑Madeleine region, in addition to chairing the Comité ministériel de l’implantation de la stratégie maritime and sitting on the Comité ministériel de l’économie, de la création d’emplois et du développement durable.
Since February 2016, he serves as Minister for Maritime Affairs in the Ministère de l’Économie, de la Science et de l’Innovation, which afford him the necessary latitude to roll out the province’s Maritime Strategy.
